Biography

Dennis Tan is the Organising Secretary of the Workers' Party and serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang SMC.

Dennis envisions a future where Singapore always has one or more strong alternative parties capable of becoming the government of the day. Dennis hopes that more Singaporeans will step forward towards this goal.

Dennis places great priority in serving his constituents, especially in assisting those in need, and finds great satisfaction in seeing them improve their situation over time. He enjoys spending time with his residents, giving them a listening ear. He believes that this would be an important safeguard for the future of Singapore.

Professionally, Dennis is a consultant and shipping lawyer at DennisMathiew Shipping Lawyers, a firm he co-founded in 2005. He is qualified to practise in both Singapore and England and Wales and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK. His career includes experience in various Singapore and English law firms.

Dennis's educational background includes early schooling at Nanyang Primary School, Raffles Institution, and Raffles Junior College. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Nottingham in 1994 and his Master’s in Maritime Law from the University of Southampton in 2005.

He is married and has a daughter who is in primary school. In his leisure time, Dennis enjoys running and cycling, and he has a keen interest in reading non-fiction. He is a dedicated fan of both Spurs and McLaren, having supported them since his student days.

A fun fact about Dennis is his love for long-distance hikes. Although he has limited opportunities to hike recently, he has enjoyed challenging trails such as the 2-week Coast-to-Coast Walk in England, the West Highland Way in Scotland, and the Milford Track in New Zealand.

Rethinking Redevelopment and Green Preservation

I speak today on a matter of increasing urgency and public concern: the need to fundamentally rethink how we assess and justify the trade-offs between essential development and the preservation of our existing green spaces. The question is how we move our planning calculus from measuring gross inputs to ensuring net, positive outcomes for our environment and our people.

Speech by Dennis Tan Lip Fong on the Health Information Bill

Mr Speaker, the Health Information Bill is transformative in the way it will set the legal framework for the mandatory contribution, collection, storage, and disclosure of health information across the entire healthcare ecosystem of Singapore. When passed, fragmented and often paper-based health records held by individual healthcare providers will be a thing of the past, morphing into a unified, interoperable National Electronic Health Record (NEHR). This is not merely a technological upgrade; the Bill promises smoother, safer, more efficient healthcare for all patients under our country’s health system. Given Singapore's rapidly ageing population, the successful implementation of the NEHR is critical to ensuring seamless care continuity across different healthcare institutions.

Speech by Dennis Tan Lip Fong On Workplace Fairness (Dispute Resolution) Bill

Mr Deputy Speaker, in August 2016, at the Debate during the second reading of the Employment Claims Bill, I had said that employment claims disputes are often mired in the context of contending allegations of breaches of employment contract and unfair dismissal or discrimination could well be part of the factual matrix in some cases. I also suggested for one Tribunal to hear all types of labour disputes including employment claims and claims for unfair dismissal and discrimination. Today I am happy to support and welcome this Bill.

Speech by Dennis Tan Lip Fong on the Transport Sector (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill

Mr. Speaker, while I support the broader objectives of this Bill, particularly the administrative amendments that seek to streamline our land and sea transport regulations for greater efficiency, I have a number of questions regarding the proposed amendments to the Bus Services Industry Act (BSIA) concerning security screening and searches.
