Biography

Dennis Tan is the Organising Secretary of the Workers' Party and serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang SMC.

Dennis envisions a future where Singapore always has one or more strong alternative parties capable of becoming the government of the day. Dennis hopes that more Singaporeans will step forward towards this goal.

Dennis places great priority in serving his constituents, especially in assisting those in need, and finds great satisfaction in seeing them improve their situation over time. He enjoys spending time with his residents, giving them a listening ear. He believes that this would be an important safeguard for the future of Singapore.

Professionally, Dennis is a consultant and shipping lawyer at DennisMathiew Shipping Lawyers, a firm he co-founded in 2005. He is qualified to practise in both Singapore and England and Wales and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK. His career includes experience in various Singapore and English law firms.

Dennis's educational background includes early schooling at Nanyang Primary School, Raffles Institution, and Raffles Junior College. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Nottingham in 1994 and his Master’s in Maritime Law from the University of Southampton in 2005.

He is married and has a daughter who is in primary school. In his leisure time, Dennis enjoys running and cycling, and he has a keen interest in reading non-fiction. He is a dedicated fan of both Spurs and McLaren, having supported them since his student days.

A fun fact about Dennis is his love for long-distance hikes. Although he has limited opportunities to hike recently, he has enjoyed challenging trails such as the 2-week Coast-to-Coast Walk in England, the West Highland Way in Scotland, and the Milford Track in New Zealand.

Speech by Dennis Tan Lip Fong On the Coastal Protection and other Amendments Bil

Mr Speaker, the Coastal Protection Bill represents a landmark shift in how we defend our island-nation against the slow-onset threat of rising sea levels. As a low-lying nation, we cannot afford to wait; however, as we move from planning to legislation, we must ensure that the "continuous line of defence" we build is not merely an engineering success, but one that is socially and fiscally responsible. Our legislative framework must be robust enough to manage the complexities of land tenure, private sector compliance, and the preservation of our national identity.

Speech by Dennis Tan Lip Fong On Resolving the "No Man's Land" Connectivity Dilemma – Covered linkways for condominiums

I filed this cut for MND but it was directed to MOT. The vision of a "Car-Lite" Singapore must require a seamless and sheltered first-and-last-mile experience for every Singaporean. The government has made meaningful progress but more can be done.

Speech by Dennis Tan Lip Fong On Addressing Heartland EV Inequities - HDB Charging Infrastructure & Reliability

In previous years, MOT pointed to chargers being available in the vast majority of HDB carparks. We are now in February 2026, and while the "coverage" is high, the "quality of access" remains unequal across our estates.

Speech by Dennis Tan Lip Fong On Same floor lift access for all HDB flats

The Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP) was launched by HDB in 2001 to provide residents with lift access to every floor. In this year’s COS, I am asking once again for same-floor lift access for all residents.
