Biography

Sylvia Lim Swee Lian has been a Central Executive Committee (CEC) member of the Workers' Party since 2001 and has served as the Party Chair since 2003. Her long-standing leadership has been instrumental in guiding the party through significant milestones, solidifying its role in Singapore’s political landscape.

What Sylvia enjoys most about her work with the party is the knowledge that, despite the difficulties, they have made a significant national impact. Her vision for Singapore is one where citizens actively fight for what they believe in, leading and organising for the causes they care about. She envisions the Workers’ Party becoming further entrenched as a pillar of Singapore's democracy.

Professionally, Sylvia has a diverse background in the legal profession, law enforcement, and teaching. She holds an LL.B (Hons) from the National University of Singapore, an LL.M from the University of London, and an M.Sc in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University.

In her personal life, she has a passion for sports and music across all genres. She also holds a Grade 8 qualification in Music Theory and Singing, which she achieved as an adult in her 30s. After dating for 12 years, Sylvia married her long time partner, football legend Quah Kim Song, in January 2025.

A fun fact about Sylvia is her love for binge-watching K-Dramas, a hobby she enjoys in her downtime.

Speech by Sylvia Lim On the Cross-Border Railways (Border Control Co-Location)

The Rapid Transit Link is expected to start passenger service at the end of this year. This Bill seeks to co-locate border control procedures by both Singapore and Malaysia at the point of departure, enabling passengers to disembark upon arrival without further checks. Having personally taken the Eurostar train from the UK to Continental Europe, I have experienced how the co-location of British and French border police at the St Pancras Station in London saved time for passengers entering Europe by rail. Similarly, to ease travel between Singapore and Malaysia, this Bill to co-locate border controls should be supported.

As at January this year, there were 410,000 Lasting Powers of Attorney registered by the Ministry. Momentum has built up, as the benefits of making LPAs become more widely understood.

Speech by Sylvia Lim On COS – MSF – Adoption of Children

There were annually around 400 adoption applications in Singapore. Adoptions should be encouraged, not just for the wholehearted act of love that it embodies, but also to mitigate our dismal TFR (Total Fertility Rate).

Speech by Sylvia Lim On COS – MOH – Cancer Treatment Costs & Coverage

Singapore’s medical cost inflation is projected to reach nearly 17% this year, significantly higher than general inflation which is under 2%. I recognise and agree that there is a need for cost containment and management of insurance premiums. On cancer specifically, MOH has made significant moves. For instance, the Cancer Drug List now has about 394 drugs listed that are eligible for subsidies and claims under Medishield Life and Integrated Plans.
