Biography

Sylvia Lim Swee Lian has been a Central Executive Committee (CEC) member of the Workers' Party since 2001 and has served as the Party Chair since 2003. Her long-standing leadership has been instrumental in guiding the party through significant milestones, solidifying its role in Singapore’s political landscape.

What Sylvia enjoys most about her work with the party is the knowledge that, despite the difficulties, they have made a significant national impact. Her vision for Singapore is one where citizens actively fight for what they believe in, leading and organising for the causes they care about. She envisions the Workers’ Party becoming further entrenched as a pillar of Singapore's democracy.

Professionally, Sylvia has a diverse background in the legal profession, law enforcement, and teaching. She holds an LL.B (Hons) from the National University of Singapore, an LL.M from the University of London, and an M.Sc in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University.

In her personal life, she has a passion for sports and music across all genres. She also holds a Grade 8 qualification in Music Theory and Singing, which she achieved as an adult in her 30s. After dating for 12 years, Sylvia married her long time partner, football legend Quah Kim Song, in January 2025.

A fun fact about Sylvia is her love for binge-watching K-Dramas, a hobby she enjoys in her downtime.

Speech by Sylvia Lim On New Offence of Possession of Unsafe Devices

I would like to seek clarifications on two aspects of the Bill. First, to the Ministry of Transport on the keeping of unsafe devices under the Small Motorised Vehicles (Safety) Act, and secondly, to the Ministry of Home Affairs on the proposed outsourcing of traffic violations processing under the Road Traffic Act.

Speech by Sylvia Lim On Crim Law (Misc Amd) Bill

This Bill makes significant changes to seventeen of our criminal statutes. Overall, I am supportive of the Bill.‍I wish to speak today on two matters that I find most significant: first, on tackling scams; second on the reduction in the use of caning for other offences. I also have some queries on the new offence of doxxing of public servants. My party colleague, Member Fadli Fawzi, will speak on related issues and other aspects of the Bill.

About Trust in Parliament

It has been four months since the last General Election. As we commence this new term of Parliament, I note that we have 31 members who are entering Parliament for the first time. I am privileged to be here for my 5th term. There are quite a few others who have been here longer, including Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his 10th term – more than 40 years. Nevertheless, I trust I may be permitted to give my personal welcome to the newly-minted MPs from both sides of the House.‍
