Biography

Jamus is the deputy head of policy research and president of the Youth Wing, where he helps shape the Party's policy agenda, while also working to inspire the next generation of youngsters in political affairs. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Sengkang GRC since July 2020, and is also a member of the Estimates Committee of the 14th Parliament of Singapore.

In addition to his political hat, Jamus is an associate professor of economics at ESSEC Business School, one of the top European business schools with a campus in Singapore, and before that, he worked in both the private and quasi-private sector (at a large sovereign wealth fund and both investment and commercial banks), as well as at a local think tank. He was schooled at Catholic High, Raffles Institution, and Raffles Junior College, before going on to earn way too many degrees at the University of Southern Queensland, the London School of Economics, the University of California, and Harvard.

Jamus is the father of a loving daughter and beautiful wife, who occupy much of the little free time he is able to squeeze out between his professional and political commitments. In addition to helping him deeply empathise with the challenges faced by young, sandwich-generation families in Sengkang, his aspirations of a brighter Singapore for his daughter is a major motivation for his service to the country.

In his wild and impetuous youth, Jamus was, variously, a drummer, rugby player, and Solitaire junkie; today, his more mundane pursuits have led him to the trails, library, and kitchen, typically in reverse order.

Speech by Jamus Lim On Helping the Poor, Here and Afar

Mr Speaker, as many in this House are aware, I was, for many years, an employee at a Bretton Woods institution, with which these two motions are associated. I declare, however, that while I maintain personal and professional relationships with staff at the World Bank—as well as a small balance in its retirement fund—I have no ongoing financial interest in the institution. This speech is therefore delivered in my capacity as a Singaporean parliamentarian.

Speech by Jamus Lim On Building a Better Bourse

Let me begin by echoing the sentiment set forth by my honorable friend, Louis Chua, on how the work of the MAS and Equities Market Review Group are a positive step forward. Yet as he shared, these efforts appear to be targeted toward improving market efficiency and functioning, but fall short of the sort of structural reforms necessary to foster sustained corporate value creation.

Speech by Jamus Lim On Whither Rules for Rules of Origin?

Sir, the amendments to the Regulation of Imports and Exports Act (RIEA) have a twofold aim: to introduce a trade information certificate (TICs) regime, and to expand the scope of search authority for customs officials.

Speech by Jamus Lim On Sticking with BEPS 2.0 in a Trump 2.0 World

Sir, the proposed amendments in the Finance (Income Tax) Bill may be split into three sets of changes: those pertaining to the Income Tax Act (ITA) and also related to the Budget this year; ITA changes that are not directly related to the Budget; and refinements to the Multinational Enterprise (Minimum Tax) Act (MMTA) that aim to clarify definitions and rules related to the OECD’s Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS 2.0) project, and specifically Global Anti-Base Erosion (GloBE) rules in Pillar 2.
