COS 2012 Debates: MTI – Energy Source And Electricity Tariff

by MP for Aljunied GRC, Low Thia Khiang

Chairman Sir,

1. The monthly electricity bill is a financial burden for many households. Although this Budget has introduced a permanent component, U-Save, under the GST Voucher, this is not enough to relieve them of this financial burden.

2. The cost of electricity not only affects households but also industries, especially SMEs. Cheaper electricity tariff will enable our industries to stay competitive.

3. It is therefore important that the government continue to look for more efficient and sustainable energy sources that will translate to cheaper electricity tariff for consumers.

4. I would also like to know what is the status of the Full Retail Contestability? Would domestic consumer be able to benefit from this?

5. We currently import about 80% of our energy needs from Malaysia and Indonesia through gas pipelines. This situation is not ideal as we are over relying on these two countries for energy sources.

6. It was reported that there is a plan under Asean Power Grid to allow member countries to trade fuel and to expand power line connections between the countries. Has there been any progress on this?

7. MTI has also formed a multi-agency team to evaluate the opportunities, challenges and risks involved with nuclear energy.  I would like to know whether the study has been concluded and if so, what are the findings?
