“What do we have that we can truly call our own?”

If there is one thing you could change about Singapore, what would it be?

I feel that we’ve lost our identity and belonging. In my line of work, I meet Chinese uncles who can speak fluent Malay, and Malay uncles who speak fluent Hokkien, because they all belonged to the same kampong. That was something unique about Singapore. Now we no longer have kampongs. Our dialects are lost. What do we have that we can truly call our own? I wish we could bring that back.
