COS 2012 Debates: MOT – Residents’ Parking in Private Estates

by MP for Aljunied GRC, Sylvia Lim

It is quite common in private estates for have households with multiple cars, especially where adult children continue to live with their parents.

In certain housing estates, roads are marked to disallow roadside parking. This could be the case where the roads are close to HDB estates, or where the roads may be used by larger vehicles for access to deliver services. However, such markings pose daily problems to families where their compound does not cater for any car parking or is insufficient to cater for the number of cars owned by the household. These residents have been issued summonses by the LTA for parking outside their homes.

I must record the constructive attitude of LTA in trying to solve specific issues concerning residents’ parking in my constituency. In one instance, LTA studied the situation with an open mind and agreed to change road markings to allow parking on one side of the road.

However, I believe this issue of residents being summoned is not uncommon in other estates as well. Is LTA looking at a more systematic solution to the problem? For instance, could certain roads be designated for residents’ parking only?
